The theory of Harmonizing Creation and Evolution has long stood at opposite ends of the spectrum of life’s origin and progression, sparking heated debates throughout centuries. The theory of evolution posits that life on Earth has evolved over billions of years through natural selection and genetic adaptation. Conversely, the concept of creation, as described in various religious scriptures, more comprehensively and methodically in the Quran, postulates that a Divine Creator brought the universe and all living beings into existence. This article aims to explore the intersection of these contrasting views, particularly through the lens of time, and illuminate the potential coexistence of evolution and creation as influenced by Quranic verses and scientific theories. As a geoscientist, I acknowledge the importance of the theory of evolution in understanding the development of life on Earth. However, this acceptance applies only to other species and within the framework of Geological Time, as we perceive it on this planet. Paradoxically, this expansive stretch of Geological Time may be a mere fleeting moment for Allah, “He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth; whenever He decrees a matter He (merely) says: Kun Fa’Yakoon (کن فیکون ), Be and it is” – Surat-ul-Baqara, Verse 117, Al Qur’an. This perspective shifts dramatically when considered from a vantage point beyond our universe. Concepts delineated in Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time” and Albert Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity portray the relativistic nature of time, as perceived by Earth-bound beings versus that from the edge of the universe, where it may cease to exist. Thus, the theories of evolution and creation can indeed coexist, with the former operating within the temporal framework comprehended by humans.

Further, the Quran offers unique insights into creation and the nature of existence. Numerous Quranic verses convey that the universe and all its inhabitants were created intentionally and with a specific purpose. For example, Surah Al-Anbiya (21:30) hints at the universe’s initial compactness and subsequent expansion, paralleling the modern cosmological theory of the Big Bang. Similarly, Surah Al-Mulk (67:3) suggests that the universe follows a harmonious and systematic structure, implying a deliberate act of creation rather than a random evolutionary process.

Intriguingly, time is portrayed in the Quran as a crucial dimension in the context of creation. Surah Al-Hajj (22:47) mentions, “And they ask you to hasten the punishment. But Allah will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count.” This verse alludes to the relativity of time, resonating with Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity.

Put it, for instance, if a brand-new car is left in the dense Amazon forest, it will deteriorate into fragments in a few years. Conversely, if all the car’s parts are placed in the most conducive environment, they will not spontaneously assemble into a car. This illustrates the pervasive nature of entropy.

The relativity of time, coupled with the Second Law of Thermodynamics (Entropy), presents a compelling counterpoint to the theory of evolution. The Second Law posits that, barring external forces, ‘order’ (or energy) naturally descends into ‘disorder’ (Entropy). Since the universe’s inception—roughly 13.8 billion years ago (or even 26.7 billion years ago as per a recent study at the University of Ottawa)—about 99% of the energy has transformed into entropy, which fundamentally contradicts the evolutionary principle of increasing complexity.

Recognizing these unpredictable facets of nature, Werner Heisenberg introduced the “Uncertainty Principle” in 1927, earning him a Nobel Prize in 1932, which asserts the impossibility of simultaneously determining certain pairs of a particle’s complementary properties with absolute precision. While challenging our classical intuition, this principle offers vital insights into particle behavior at the subatomic level.

Considering these scientific phenomena, Divine intervention seems indispensable in creating this vast universe, including us—the best of His creations اشرف المخلوقات) ). The universe’s enormity, in both time and space, coupled with its eloquent depiction in the Quran, inspired me to delve into the works of renowned scientists like Einstein, Murray Gell-Mann, Stephen Hawking, and Michio Kaku, the latter two of whom I had the privilege of meeting in person, albeit shortly.

These profound insights into Cosmology, Geoscience, Quantum Physics, Spirituality, and God’s ultimate creation—humanity—are awe-inspiring. The “String Theory” connects everything from quarks to the colossal universe. It seems to be the ‘Big Crunch’—the opposite of the ‘Big Bang’—that collapses this vast universe into a single quark (tiniest of the particles).

In conclusion, the potential coexistence of the theories of Harmonizing Creation and Evolution offers a unique perspective on our understanding of life, the universe, and everything in between. The interplay of these theories with spiritual beliefs, encapsulated by Quranic verses and scientific concepts, underscores the need for a holistic view of the cosmos—where the mysteries of creation and the intricacies of the natural world converge in harmony. The exploration of this intersection elucidates a world where science and spirituality do not contradict but complement each other, enriching our quest to comprehend our existence and the universe we inhabit.
